Counselling vs CBT,

NICE guidelines to be revisited.

A review of National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines is set to begin following a re-analysis of research which shows that there are equivalent outcomes for CBT and Counselling in severe depression.

The current NICE guidelines do not include a recommendation for Counselling due to a lack of clinical evidence. Following pressure from the mental health sector including professional counselling association BACP, it has been agreed that a review of recommendations is required following this re-analysis.

The Equivalent of NICE in Scotland is the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN), and it is anticipated that this review will extend into Scottish recommendations also.
